Finally got here!

Well, I finally made it here to Japan. Already spent three days in Kyoto, which was nice, although I'm a bit fried on temple-watching (Ryoanji and Sanjusangendo were my faves...)

I love the constant exposure to new design...so many little ideas. I love the sink on top of the toilets utilizing the same water twice, the three-wheeled motorcycles, my sister's fridge with the door that can be opened from either side...

I think it's great that so many people will spend so much time looking so nice, dressing up, etc. and then plop on a goofy looking surgical mask to lower their exposure to pollen and/or prevent the spread of their illness. I was told when Sting first visited, he thought it was "good style" and put one on himself!

Now I've got a good solid month without a whole lot of itinerary, and a JR railpass. Of course, I'll have to make it to Tokyo, but some other things I'd like to do:

-visit an onsen
-see a Butoh performance
-Visit Miyazaki studio
-See the Ise shrine
-maybe Kamakura,Nara?

Otherwise, I don't have a very concrete idea for travelling. It seems that sights alone will quickly become overwhelming and cloying, returning me to the search for that which we long for the most: connection with others, a daunting task in a foreign land. Without an extensive grasp of the language, it leaves the likelihood for such a thing in the cities with English-speakers, or fellow travellers. I don't get too far with the folks here where my sister lives, Kagawa-ken on Shikoku. But then, I've got plenty of Udon to keep me company.

What do you do when travelling to prevent the decline into the numbing world of sightseeing and break through into the world of vivifying travel?

Don't forget to stop in Shimokitazawa if you visit Tokyo....cool neighborhood sadly threatened by a large road construction project (you can stop there on the way to the hayao miyazaki museum as it's on the way)....

hi, please make sure to sign the petition at stsk.net if you care about shimokita. it's a long shot but with enough intl exposure maybe the tokyo govt will stop this b.s. project.

also, forward the stsk.net and saveshimo.com links to all your friends.

it would really suck to lose shimo to the a-holes that run tokyo (like the tokyo governor Ishihara)

Where is Shimokitazawa? It's not in any of my books.

I tried to check out the petition, but the links are broken.
Losing a culturally interesting neighborhood in the name of a big road always sucks. The saving of interesting neighborhoods for the sake of their culture alone probably began with the campaign to save Greenwich Village in New York. That campaign worked, now no young artists can afford to live there....

you're right. the link is broken. it looks like an error on their site. please send email to info@stsk.net and tell them you want to sign the petition.

shimokitazawa is easy to get to from either Shinjuku or Shibuya. From inside Shibuya station follow the signs to the "keio inogashira" line. Once at the keio inogashira line take any of the trains. by local train it's 4 stops away or by express it's only 1 stop away.

from shinjuku take the odakyu line. it's about 10 minutes from shinjuku a couple of stops past yoyogi uehara station.

              Great! Thanks!

Now here's a question that I'm sure has no definite answer: Where does Shimo end and Shinjuku or Shibuya begin? Also, why is it that Shimokitazawa appears nowhere in any of the travel books I have? Is it a sub-neighborhood that only recently and colloquially been called a separate neighborhood, previously considered just a cool part of one of the larger neighborhoods?

Maybe I'll figure it all out once I visit next week.
              Thanks again for the directions.

I fould Shimo, and it is great. I was starting to get worried about the Japanese youth, but here is a neighborhood that proves that you've just got to find the ones who have good taste. Went to a fun restaurant where everything on the eclectic menu was 399 yen, bingo drink cards, paper/rock/scissors for free ice cream, wacky decor, and free cotton candy on the way out. Sweet. Great shops with great music everywhere, cafes...this place is definitely worth saving. Thanks for the tip!

Oops, I meant I found shimo, not fouled it. How could I foul up Tokyo any more than it already is?

Keyboards in Japan are hard to use.

So are the phones at first, which took me a while to figure out that when getting a phone number off the internet, I had to drop the country code and replace it with a zero. The extending straw in my juicebox was easy, as well as the beer vending machine, as was taking the wrong train line in Tokyo an hour out of my way. And all the people driving on the wrong side of the road are still giving me vertigo.

Yes to Kamakura. Get off at the Kita-Kamakura station first, and walk out of the (tiny) station into the Zen temple. It's amazing. Then get back on the train and go the the Kamakura station where there's an amazing Shinto shrine. I saw a wedding there last weekend. It was quite beautiful.

if you are already in kyoto why not visit osaka and kobe?

also, hiroshima is excellent (my wife's from there); miyajima island is very close by and the tame deer, famous tori gate and virgin forests are beautiful. that island has no development on about 75% of its area camping on the opposite side from where the ferry/tourists are, and a nice secluded beach too. there is a cool ryokan there - Momiji-so that is reasonable and right in the middle of a park/garden:

Of course visiting the atomic bomb memorial/museum in Hiroshima is a serious but very humanizing experience too....

Ganbatte and have a good time!
