I plan to go to Japan in October and would like to stay there for as long as my money and tourist status permit me. I am in love with Koyto. Does anyone know cheap but decent hostels/hotels in or near Koyto?
Thank you!!
Thank you!!

Re: Kyoto Hostels/Cheap Accomodations Recommendation?
Thu, June 28, 2007 - 9:30 PMthere is an amazing backpackers which is really clean and friendly and nice which is right near Kinkakuji - The Golden Pavillion. Its a little bit away from the main part of town but it is really great and cheap. I cant remember the name of it but its in the lonely planet guide. I rented a bicycle from them and rode around for a whole day. There are so many temples in that area too. It even snowed quite heavily the time i was there. Its really easy to get there, just have to catch a bus from Kyoto station. Totally recommend it. I think it was only around 2000 yen a night. Had a great bathroom... well all the hostels do in Japan anyway. You can also easily get to Nara from Kyoto as well. -

Fri, June 29, 2007 - 8:46 AMThere is actually a place called the Cheapest Inn... and it's about a night. It was actually one of my favorite places my group stayed at. Not to far from the eki... and there's a pool/ramen house across the street... Great Ramen too. It's off the main street and there's a convient store and a pastry shop on the corner. The owner rents bicycles for the day as well. It's really close to Nijo Castle as well (great place to visit as well--- it has the golden temple on it's grounds as well). They have a roof deck as well where there's a great few and tables you can sit at.

Wed, July 4, 2007 - 1:35 AMkyoto is awesome and a shinkansen destination - but if you have time you should go just a little further south to osaka, kobe, hiroshima, miyajima island... Nara is also supposed to be great but I haven't been there. Ganbatte! -

Re: Kyoto Hostels/Cheap Accomodations Recommendation?
Wed, July 4, 2007 - 8:09 PMYes yes... definitely those are great places to go. Miyajima Island has a BEAUTIFUL place called the Floating Temple. It's on post so when the tide comes in well yeah you know. And there's a skii tram that you can take up to the mountain. Also a great aquarium.
Kobe is a nice spot as well. There's a mall there (that's not the part that I want to tell you is important) but located just behind there is bridge. That is AMAZING to see at sunset. It's a modern structure. But it's one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. And as the sun sets... the lights turn on. It looks like dew on a spider web.
HIroshima is just a must see... oh so is nara... and osaka. What is not cool in Japan.
Also if you want to be in a more rural area... Nishibata is a great stop too. There is a BEAUTIFUL iris garden there with nice walking trails. -

Wed, July 4, 2007 - 8:58 PMI totally recommend Yakushima Island. Amazing. Just catch a ferry from Kagoshima in Kyushuu or you can fly there. Beaches, onsen, beautiful amazing forests and of course, Jomon sugi.. supposedly anywhere from 3000 - 7000 year old cedar tree.

Re: Kyoto Hostels/Cheap Accomodations Recommendation?
Thu, July 5, 2007 - 10:38 PMim not a fan of the central Kyoto bit... but walking around Gion and round the old back streets is great. Utano is where I stayed in Kyoto (just discovered its closed until next year for renovations) which is out of the city, bit more in the country hills area. I like Nara too, but also not a big fan of the ugly city centre bit - but its teeny weeny. I think its the fact that most cities in Japan look the same pretty much, boxy, brash neon, plasticy, grey.... you just got get a bit more local, get into the nooks and crannies and find the old subtle worn parts of town. -

Re: Kyoto Hostels/Cheap Accomodations Recommendation?
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 9:51 AMThe JNTO Japan Travel Center can book ryokan and that may take you out of the overwhelming concentration of Westerners at hotels in guidebooks, if that is what you are in the mood for. A special spot for me is the Fushimi Inari shrine www.kyoto.travel/place_to_go/fushimi_inari_shrine_oinarisan.html . Japan and China share the fox spirit mythology. The foxes are somewhat mischievous and, when provoked, downright malevolent but that still makes for a beautiful crazy shrine with hundreds of carved stone foxes. Just be sure not to offend them!
